TOO BIG

OMG! So I was in bed last night, as usual listening to Rinse FM with my bottle of Johnson's Baby Oil, looking for some late night entertainment. I flick on to Channel 4 hoping for another Emmanuelle re-run and then OMG! Maxwell D, DJ Scientist and Bruza (for some peculiar reason, he's calling himself Derek) are all sitting around in the Big Brother house. WTF? Bruza's pretending he's some kind of camp socialite (I always knew he wasn't real...) and Maxwell D is now white (talk about a change of image). I didn't witness anyone "barring", although there was some "beef": DJ Scientist (who appears to be pretending he's in the Virus Syndicate?!) grabbed a plastic dustbin and tried to merk Maxwell D. It was like the "Don't watch no face" Lady Fury Conflict DVD incident all over again! The whole thing had me in a lather of sweat.

I was wondering why Scientist wasn't doing his Rinse FM show this week. Now it's all so clear. I know Muskateers Crew have been getting air on road, but was there really any need for this Maxwell? I expected it from Bruza, but i thought more of you.

I love the way the director juxtaposes the dream imagery of Gondry with the instinctive spontaneity of Spike Jonze (the use of a 'wasteman'), while fusing these ideas together with the absurdity (bruza's dancing) and obsession with technology (the use of mobile phones) of something akin to a Chris Cunningham film. Mind bending.

Perhaps the slewing of the wasteman (seen offering his Newkie Brown to the audience in 'course bruv'-esque camaraderie) is a long-overdue ritual abandonment of Genius Kru's matey garage heritage to a darker iconicity of aggieness, nash-banging and steel pipes. The endz symbolically defeats the frendz. That said, who still has a Newkie Brown? Well?

Ahh yes, the ritual slewing of the 'wasteman'. Perhaps the most vivid imagery portrayed in the video. It does indeed (symbolically) prefigure the "abandonment of Genius Kru's matey garage heritage" as you so rightly state. The offering, by the 'wasteman', of the Newkie Brown is a heterodoxical way of justifying the need to slew the waste man, maybe?

But is this slewing justified?

As Nietzsche said: "punishment hardens and renders people more insensible; it concentrates; it increases the feeling of estrangement; it strengthens the power of resistance. "

Could the slewing of the waste man indeed be as destructive as the reverse? Will the 'wastemen' eventually rise to conquer the "darker iconicity of aggieness, nash-banging and steel pipes." Are we to see a cyclical alternation of opposites, an attunement at variance with itself, an eternal recurrence of ascent and descent? Hold tight shizzle.

Big up Simon.

That Ruff Sqwad tune is huge. That was the beat in the background when they went to the Ruff Sqwad studio in Aim High 2. Good to hear a vocal version is finally done.
