Grime Primers

The Philistines have spoken, but now it's time to set the record straight (pun intended), with a definitive list of grime primers...

1. Band Aid 20 - Do They Know It's Christmas [Features Dizzie Raskle]
2. Craig David - 7 Days [A black boy from the Urban ends of Southampton]
3. Artful Dodger - Re-Rewind [Has the word 'rewind' in the title]
4. Blondie - Rapture [Song where woman raps. Lady Sov's obvious influence]
5. M.I.A. - Hombre [She's black, she's from the ends, she raps...]
6. The Streets - Weak Become Heroes [Kano was in one of his videos]
7. Oxide & Neutrino - "Bound 4 Da Reload (Casualty) [Duh...]
8. Daniel Beddingfield - Gotta get Thru This [Straight from the bedroom to the road]
9. Ja Rule - Between me and you [I was running out of ideas here]
10. The Streets - Let's push things forward [Listen, this guy basically invented grime. Where do you think they got the idea for the forward riddim and the club night FWD>>?]

WITNESS

Check out this amazing new track from Lady Sovereign's Album:

MP3: Lady Sovereign - Witness (Jammer Remix)

I love the way she so perfectly emulates Jamaican patois on this track. On "Random" she sounds like a tongue-less shetland pony speaking in a cod-Jamaican accent, while being strangled by her fetish-loving owner. Here, she sounds so real, you'd think she was actually black.

Also, check out this new David Banner joint in collaboration with gyal of the moment, M.I.A:

MP3: David Banner feat. M.I.A. - My Hometown

If, like me, you've been baffled by the hype concerning M.I.A., but have reserved judgement 'cos she's an immigrant and Thom Yorke likes immigrants, then wait until you here this! It's actually really good. You don't even need to pretend you like this one for a change.

While we're on the subject of grime, let's get even grime-ier with this grimey beast of a track from The Streets' new promo.

MP3: The Streets - Skeng

On this track, Mike Skinner "sings" about his struggle growing up on the mean streets of Barnsley. With lyrical content as real as this, it's unsuprising why journalists are calling Mike Skinner the new MC Neutrino.

While you're at it, you might as well download this Diplo mix:

MP3: DJ Diplo - Baile Funk Mix

It's basically glorified South American big beat, but I'm guessing that's irrelevant and you're all gonna just file it alongside your reggaeton mixes that you've been collecting over the past few years.

Monday

According to Simon Reynolds, Oxide and Neutrino invented grime.

That was clever of them.
